What I Drive
2024 VW Arteon TDI Shooting Brake
#1
Hello All,
Thanks for accepting me into the group. My name is Fred, I recently moved back to France after 42 years in the US where I still spend a couple of months a year.
42 years in the US means I'm on the older side for playing with cars, but I love cars. Always have. I've been a BMW fan boy for decades and currently own four of them plus a MINI. I've had more than a dozen of them, plus a few Jeeps, Mazda Miata, Nissan Maxima back when they were cool, a Citroen that goes up and down...
Today I signed the purchase agreement for a 2024 Arteon Shooting Brake. My first VAG vehicle. It's a former VW exec car with 23,200km. Probably not the most exciting build given it's the Elegance and it has the oil burning TDI 150hp motor bolted to the DSG7 transmission. It's slow but hoping the TDI's reputation for long term durability is not fake news and makes up for the lack of speed. It will be the beast of burden of my fleet doing the heavy lifting while the garage queens stay nice and clean. Its fate is to drive French country roads on rainy days, take trips to the dump with a trailer, carry bikes for outdoor adventures, and also take several Euro trips a year. The beauty of no longer working...
I looked at DS7 and Peugeot 508 as alternatives but the recent Stellantis products are a disaster from reliability standpoint. That and I saw an Arteon Shooting Brake driving way ahead of me a few months ago and I could not identify what it was. They're rare here and I had not noticed one before in shooting brake form. I thought it might be a Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo but something about it also said it was not. So I sped up so I could get closer and fell in love with that shooting brake rump. Fate was sealed, out with the Citoren C5 and in with the Arteon as the beater of the fleet.
I take delivery Wednesday next week and first order of business will be a full detail. I have a Westphalia trailer invisible hitch on order for dump trailer and bike carrying duties, install will follow. I tend to take a lot of pictures of my cars and possibly over share on the BMW forum. You've been warned.
Looking forward to seeing everyone's posts and adventures with their cars.
Cheers!
